Cruise Ship Jobs, Departments

To keep the organization and good guest satisfaction always at high level, the Cruise Ship industry has a simple but genius concept.
The Department System.
With establishing different departments, it is way easyer for the Cruise Lines to control and organize a high number of crew members on board.
At the end, if the system is functioning flawless, the guest is satisfied.
Every single crew member on board is assigned to a specific department, in which he/she is performing their daily duty's, responsibility's and tasks.

The Department System consists of 6 major category's.
* Nautical
* Engineering
* Hotel
* Entertainment
* Administration
* Provision
 These departments are then divided in to subcategory's , and the system is complete.

When applying for a position on a Cruise Ship, it is always important to state the position which You are applying for, and the Department.
Here is an example:
I'm applying for a position as a Head Waiter in the F&B department, which is one of the subcategory's under the Hotel Department.
So in the end You will be working under the Hotel Department, and Your executive superior will be the Hotel Manager
No matter under which department You work, it is crucial to know and follow the rules of this System.
In that way a "chain of command" is established.
Chain of command is a line of authority and responsibility which is passed from the executive superior, following the strict order of command.
Example:
Master (Captain)- General Manager- Hotel Manager- F&B Manager- Ass. F&B Manager- Bar Chef- Bar Waiter
In this way the chain of command is complete.

So if You are going to work on a Cruise Ship regardless in which department, keep in mind that You will have to follow certain rules and commands of the "Ship Life".

  1. I like this post. I agree that it is important to state the position which You are applying for, and the Department. A lot of applicants were missing this out. I'll send this post to my cousin who is to apply for cruise ship job Philippines.

    Thanks for sharing!
